WINLINK2000 DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS

You are in the middle of a South American jungle or perhaps in the Mojave desert and would like to send an email message to someone on a sailing vessel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. How do you do it? WINLINK2000 is the answer.

While the WINLINK2000 may not be considered "new" to some radio operators, the use of digital technolgy is increasingly becoming a widely accepted and efficient means of communicating. What is new about WINLINK2000 is the fact that more and more emergency organizations are using the system for true emergency-situation communications. And here's why:
  1. Digital messages have a much higher degree of success in completing a full message transmission and receipt.
  2. Lower power can be used than with other forms of communicating, while still accomplishing world-wide data transfer..
  3. Less error is introduced since written messages can be routed and rerouted, and rerouted again without introducing error. Error correction protocols are also incorporated into the messaging software systems.
  4. Digital messaging is commonplace now within industry, military and emergency applications. Most users prefer to communicate in writing than verbal means.
  5. Even in remote locations, email-type computer digital messaging is possible. Examples are sailing vessels and expeditions that are without the typical coverage of cell-phone towers, telephone lines or other modern conveniences.

WINLINK2000 is a world-wide digital radio message system which makes extensive use of the Internet for forwarding purposes. All messages from operators both to and from other users travel to some extent along the internet . This advanced means of communications has been proven to be fast, efficient and surprisingly reliable. WINLINK also features position reporting, weather and bulletin services as well as emergency communications. The basic system consists of a backbone that runs the WINLINK2000 software along with "clients" or radio operators who are transmitting and receiving messages using a "client" software that is then interfaced with an HF radio. Accordingly, the WINLINK2000 system is the marriage of radio and the Internet for digital communications. Recent system usage statistics prove the popularity of the new system (as of July 2006); Over 150,000 messages are transferred and handled monthly from over 9000 users world-wide... wow!
